A Green Revolution: The Orchard Theatre’s Mammoth Sustainability Transformation
The refurbishment of the Orchard Theatre is far more than a cosmetic facelift; it is a “mammoth” engineering project designed to future-proof one of Dartford’s most beloved cultural assets. While much of the work remains hidden behind walls and above ceilings, the venue is undergoing a radical shift toward a greener, safer, and more efficient future.
The Power of Efficiency
At the heart of our sustainability mission is a full electrical rewire and the installation of additional PV (Photovoltaic) solar panels. By generating our own renewable energy on-site, we are directly reducing our carbon footprint.
This power is managed by high-tech Paradigm and DALI lighting controls. Unlike traditional systems, these allow us to dim or deactivate lights with pinpoint precision, ensuring no energy is wasted in empty corridors or during technical setups. This is paired with an all-new AHU (Air Handling Unit) and a fully commissioned BMS (Building Management System). These systems work in tandem to optimize heating, cooling, and ventilation—reacting in real-time to the size of the audience to ensure we only use the energy we truly need.

Engineered for Longevity
Sustainability also means building things to last. The replacement of the entire roof and the installation of a new auditorium ceiling (built with acoustic dampening and integrated LED architectural lighting) aren’t just about aesthetics; they improve the building’s thermal envelope, keeping heat in during the winter and out during the summer.
Even the “invisible” infrastructure is going green. We have removed pipework deadlegs to improve water efficiency and hygiene, and upgraded our data infrastructure to support a digital-first approach, reducing our reliance on paper.
A Mammoth Commitment to Safety and Access
A truly sustainable venue is one that serves everyone for decades to come. That’s why we’ve invested heavily in life safety and accessibility:
Safety First: We’ve installed a new smoke curtain, sprinklers, and an L1 fire alarm system, alongside extensive fire door replacements.
Inclusion: From a new accessible lift and DDA-compliant toilets in the upper foyer to accessible seating in the upper stalls, the theatre is becoming more inclusive than ever before.
Production Excellence: New production gantries and a revised lighting bridge allow our technical teams to work more safely and efficiently, reducing the time and energy required for show turnovers.
This project is a marathon, not a sprint. Every cable laid and every sensor installed is a step toward a theatre that is as kind to the planet as it is inspiring to our audiences. We aren’t just reopening a theatre; we are launching a new era of sustainable performance.
